Jekyll Island is home to one of the most intact tidal marsh ecosystems along the eastern seaboard of the United States.
Twice a day the tides rise and fall, the tidal surges delivering nutrients and distributing nutrients throughout the marsh and returning them back to the estuaries and bays.
Salt marsh grasses, shrubs and a variety of trees live in Jekyll’s tidal marsh, which is protected by law from development. Mammals, reptiles and birds live and breed in the approximately 1,300 acres of salt marsh.
